“Make haste slowly” was Caesar Augusta’s admonition 2000 years ago. It’s apt advice in our hectic world today. It’s also apt coming from Italy since this is a blog inspired by that country.
This is Bill Steiner’s blog, co-owner of Adventures in Italy, where we lead trips to Orvieto, Italy that are a combination of cultural immersion, self-discovery, and lifelong learning. The blog exists:
- To explore how Italy inspires us to live life a little more fully, richly, deeply, slowly and sanely in our busy world.
- To keep you up-to-date on what we are doing at Adventures in Italy.
My partner in this voyage is my wife Kristi. She is the artist, the one most in tune with her true self, the one who inspires and guides me. You can see her work at www.kristinsteiner.com and her yearly creativity retreat website: Believe in Yourself.
I have spent 30 years working in and with communities. That work has been about creating a quality physical environment in which we come together as people to share – a basic human need. I started out in historic preservation, and moved on to downtown revitalization, community planning and community building. Adventures in Italy is my second career, one in which the importance of place I learned over 30 years, is integral and key to our trips. The sense of place and community we see in Orvieto inspires and instructs us and the people who travel with us.
I watch the pace at which we live today and am saddened. We are missing life for a host of reasons, which, for me, just don’t make sense. Our great hope with our Italy trips is to open the door to the joys, rewards, peace and quiet that are possible today. I believe most of us want it. Tasting it in Orvieto for a week I trust will induce a few small-to-large changes that enrich life for all of us. And if it doesn’t, at least it will have been a totally fun week!
It is, frankly, a kick in the pants to be doing something entirely new, yet tied to what has guided me for 30 years. Join us in Italy!! Why? Check out the 10 Reasons page on this blog (tab at the top of the page.)
Hello, Bill. Discovered a link to your blog from Wild Somerset Child. I vacationed in Umbria one September – not the whole month – I only wish it had been. The picture you show at the top: Is that Orvieto? Lovely, wherever it is. jeanne in Oregon
Hi Jeanne,
Yes, that is Orvieto as seen from across the valley at a vineyard. It is lovely – as is Orvieto up close!
We have three teachers from Oregon with our Adventures In Italy. Two, Judy Wise and Katie Kendrick are teaching with us in Orvieto this fall, and Stephanie Lee will be teaching in the spring of 2010.
Do you know Anne – the Wild Somerset Child? We have been fortunate enough to teach in England the last two years and have stayed afterwords at Anne’s amazing ancient stone home that she and her husband have literally rebuilt. They have shown us the most beautiful and amazing places in the areas around their community. We get to go again this year! Bill Steiner
Dear Bill, I am so glad I led someone to your blog and will be posting re AII again shortly. All the best for the trip this Autumn. Ann from UK (and both you and Kristi know just how ‘wild’ I am!)
I just found your blog via Our Italian Table and love it! Italy is my dream vacation– maybe when my youngest goes off to college in a year and a half and I need a distraction and something to look forward too. Thanks again for your beautiful blog. Heidi
Heidi, you are very kind. I’m glad you like the blog. Italy is a dream vacation even after more than a dozen times! In fact, it just gets better, and what we do with our trips is give people a more intimate experience with the delectable Italian way of life. We’d love to have you join us. If you like, sign up for our newsletter on our web site to stay up to date on our trips – http://www.AdventuresInItaly.net. We will be publishing the next issue in a couple days. Thanks again for your nice words. Bill
dear bill i dont have much to say i only want to tell you that i love your blog.
In 1988, I bought the best pair of shoes in Orvieto. Still have them but haven’t worn them in nearly 15 years. Can’t let them go. Boy, I’d love to go back to Orvieto. Gotta get the kids through college first.
We have a house in Bagni di Lucca and I spend about 6 months a year there. I love Orvieto and have been a few times. I write a blog too, I have the same theme as you – Ocean Mist. http://bagnidilucca.owrdpress.com How do I sign up for yours?
I made a mistake. It is obviously http://bagnidilucca.wordpress.com
Thanks for stopping by. We absolutely love Lucca, but have not been to Bagni di Lucca. Looks very nice and how lucky to spend 6 months a year there.
Since you are from Australia, you might be interested to know we have lots of people traveling with us from Australia and have a teacher who teaches for us from Sydney – Lisa Walton. Our daughter is currently in Sydney in graduate school. She loves it!
